How to use logic Gates in the projects
Creating projects on Conrad Connect enables you combine smart devices with one another and automate them in a smart way, through "if this, then that" principle. In order to start building a project, go to Projects section on the top navigation bar and then press "+New project" button. After pressing the button the graphical rule editor will open, where you can create your projects.
Projects can contain 3 parts: Sensors, logic Gates and Actuators. Today we will be talking about the logic Gates section as shown on the picture below:
Logic Gates can check the states of different sensors simultaneously and pass "True" or "False" states to the actuators. This means you can define rules based on the states of different sensors and use it for triggering the actuators. An example of an actuator being triggered is turning a light on, changing the heating temperature and so on.
There are 3 types of logic Gates: AND, NAND, OR and GENERIC (COMBO). Let's have a look at each of them with simple usecases.
Part 1 - AND Gate
The end gate combines the states of several sensors. If the state of all sensors is TRUE, then the outcome is also TRUE, otherwise FALSE. Check out the example below:
To see the properties of a Gate simply click on it. As you can see on the right side, in the property of the AND Gate, the Gate checks if it's currently weekend and if it's currently night. If both conditions are TRUE, the outcome will be TRUE as well. In this usecase we use a Philiphs Hue light as an actuator. Click on it to open the properties and select Trigger on states as TRUE as shown below
Since the sensors constantly check the status of a weekend and night, every time it's weekend and it's night, the AND Gate state will be TRUE and trigger the light. You can use this usecase , for example, for your garden lighting.
In case of NAND gate If the state of all sensors is TRUE, then the outcome is FALSE. As soon as one sensor is FALSE or all the sensors are FALSE then the outcome is TRUE. As an example, imagine, you would like to keep the temperature and the CO2 level in the room within certain ranges and get notified if when one of the sensors reports either higher or lower values than your range. Then NAND gate would be a perfect help:
In this example connect your sensors to the NAND gate and define your ranges within the sensors. As soon as one of sensor value goes out of the range the gate will trigger the email. Don’t forget to set the trigger on states as TRUE for the Email.
Important: since the last update on March 2nd, the OR gates were replaced with NAND gates in all already existing projects.
The OR gate is quite simple. It passes FALSE value only when all the sensors are FALSE, otherwise it will always be TRUE.
In this example below, you want to get notified when either the rain level is high or the temperature is below the range defined by you
Inside the SMS properties if you set trigger on states as TRUE, the email will be sent when either of the sensors or both of them pass the TRUE parameter to the OR gate
Generic (combo gate)
Generic combo can be helpful when there are too many options and you want to pick the states of the sensors on which the actuators will be triggered. In order to get started with the gate, click on it and open the wizard(öffnen Sie den Assistenten).
Then select the combinations as you please.
To sum up here is the overview of the logic gates and the values they pass. 1 means the sensor state is TRUE and 0 equals to FALSE.
